At the particular juncture in history which Martha Few deals with in her article “That Monster of Nature: Gender, Sexuality, and the Medicalization of a ‘Hermaphrodite’ in Late Colonial Guatemala,” Western Europeans and their colonial counterparts felt themselves to be at the peak of human understanding. Charged for the crime of double-concubinage with both a man and a woman, Juana Aguilar was brought before the court, where her sexual ambiguity became the topic of discussion, warranting further medical examination. In order to settle the matter, renowned physician and harbinger of Enlightenment philosophy, Narciso Esparragosa was called in to perform a medical examination on Juana so that she could be officially categorized, allowing the court to proceed with its ruling.

What I find interesting about this article is the belief that it was the duty and responsibility of Esparragosa, a man of science, steeped in the European tradition of the day, to scientifically determine and define Juana’s gendered identity for her. Few makes the point that Juana’s own words, her opinions and emotions, are absent from the historical record, perhaps never recorded or considered at all, so that only Esparragosa, with his condescending and dehumanizing nicknames like “Juana La Larga” or simply “La Juana,” have authority in defining her body officially. The exact power dynamics of the situation with regards to race and ethnicity are difficult to determine because Juana’s is not known and while we know that Narciso moved from Venezuala to Guatemala I am not sure we know his ethnicity or how closely he was connected to the colonial power structure. Nevertheless, I feel that this is a prime example of the Western colonizers imposition of his (and I think its safe to say “his” here) own values and interpretations of the world onto the colonized people, in this case Juana.

In assuming a link between an enlarged clitoris and the deviant behavior of sodomy, the so-called scientific man unscientifically constructs a connection between a occurrance of the natural world, i.e. ambiguous genitalia, and a certain set of cultural behaviors, i.e. sodomy, deviance, etc. This natural occurrence could be culturally interpreted any number of ways, yet Esparragosa and the culture from which he originates has chosen to connect hermaphroditism with a sense of abomination or deviance from nature, despite the fact that intersexuality is a natural occurence.

This episode can also be seen as cultural tyranny in the fact that he likens her “abnormal” condition to that commonly seen in Egyptian and other Eastern women. Esparragosa’s definition of normal is clearly slanted to favor the West as the yardstick by which the rest of the world is to be measured. His treatment of Juana, particularly his repeated attempts at creating an erection in her clitoris to see if she could perform sexually as a man, but also his appropriation of her rights to self-definition and voice, are despicable, humiliating, and ultimately dehumanizing. Some Enlightenment, huh?

In Patricia Seed’s To Love, Honor, and Obey…, the author demonstrates how the spread of capitalism throughout Western Europe brought about a dramatic change in popular attitudes towards marriage choice, a change which was reflected over time in the responses of the Church to conflicts over Marriage. In the 16th and 17th centuries, whenever there was disagreement between parents and their children with respect to a marriage, the Church always defended the right of children to actualize their own wishes in marriage, rather than obeying the wishes of their parents. This can be seen in Seed’s first example, which she dubs “Romeo and Juliet in Mexico,” as well as countless other examples Seed uses throughout the book. The reason for the Church’s ruling in such disputes is rooted in the cultural perceptions of marriage, seen as an intersection between Will, Love, and Honor. Seed defines these seemingly amorphous concepts within the Spanish Catholic language of meaning, which saw an individual’s Will as ordained by God ( as opposed to the Protestant notion of predestination), and Love as a particular manifestation of this Will. Marriage also involved the concept of Honor, fundamental to the Spanish worldview, which took on two distinct characters: Honor as virtue, which for women meant the preservation of sexual virtue, and for men meant the keeping of promises, such as the promise to marry a girl whose sexual virtue he has sullied, and Honor as status, which means Honor afforded to members of a higher social class.

With the spread of capitalism in the late 17th and on through the 18th and 19th centuries, Seed traces a paradigmatic shift in view of these three concepts, which over time changed public opinion surrounding parental authority and marriage, thus affecting the Church’s stance on such issues. Fist of all, as money gained importance in society Honor as Status began to eclipse Honor as Virtue, and in situations in which these interests collided, such as a man of higher status’s promise to marry a lower status girl, the side of Status, often reflected in the parents’ wishes for a marriage took precedence. Also the view of Will as divine ordinance began to diminish as the capacity for fickleness of Will became increasingly apparent, and so the importance attributed to Love was diminished as well. Essentially, as these concepts became devalued in the public eye, they took a backseat to Interest, a blanket term used to refer to any motive focused on personal gain. The shift to capitalism was combined with philosophic views which stressed “rational self-interest” and utilitarian gain over a religious conception of the world, in which a person’s will was the manifestation of God’s will. While it is common practice in the Western world today to see this shift in values as progress, seeing the Church’s rule as dogmatic and overbearing, it is important also to realize that in making this shift, the West has swapped a value-system centered around virtue for one centered around money and its “rational” acquisition. In the case of marriage choice, however, as the Church began o change with the culture to incorporate these views into its own doctrine, it in fact became more dogmatic and overbearing.

Excellent Post! I really liked the last point that you made about the difference in potential gender fluidity between men and women, and I think that this difference is really critical to an understanding of gender in today’s society. In the wake of the presumed liberation of women, females in our society are put in a position of having to express both femininity and masculinity in order to survive. They must be able to compete with men in male-dominated fields, but also must present a display of femininity in order to avoid the slew of derogatory words used to describe women that do not display such femininity. In short, to survive in a supposedly liberated society (and I stress the “supposed” nature of this liberation for obvious reasons), women must synthesize both the masculine and the feminine into a unified identity. For men, however, only displays of masculinity are valued. What I’m basically saying is that, even though we live in a society that claims to be egalitarian in terms of gender, gender is valued in the scale of masculinity, there is no space in which feminine attributes, and I mean genuinely feminine attributes, not the aspects of femininity that have been favorably appraised by men, are considered valuable. A woman has to in some way embody androgyny in order to be considered successful as a woman.

On the flip-side of this, femininity is not valued in men, and therefore men must only display that which is masculine in order to be seen as successful. This mirrors the situation in early Spain, in which it was considered a positive thing, a social promotion if you will, for a woman to be regarded as a man, but if a man does not measure up to the expectations of masculinity, he is robbed of his manhood, essentially receiving an incredibly humiliating social demotion. I think it is interesting that this same structure of gender fluidity, in which only movement in one direction, towards the masculine, is considered favorable, still can be seen in today’s presumably gender-liberated society.

I thought that one of the most interesting characters in the primary source we read this week was the old woman who congratulates the mother on her sons having turned out well. In her lifetime, this old woman has witnessed the fall of the indigenous order under which she grew up, the arrival of the Spanish, and the consolidation of Spanish rule over the Mexica people. While she would have most likely been brought up in the Mexica tradition, worshiping the Mexica panoply of gods, she now speaks the rhetoric of the Catholic church just like the other Nahuatl speakers seen in this text. It would seem that the Catholic worldview has been syncretically absorbed by her, and made to fit the world around her. Yet, despite this seeming adoption of Spanish values, her reminiscences of the past are fondly nostalgic and her view of the present and future is exceedingly grim. In congratulating the mother on raising such fine sons, she expresses the fact that very few people grow up anymore, they just die off. This is perhaps an allusion to the wave of disease brought by the Spanish, or perhaps it refers to the hard life led by indigenous people, particularly males it would seem from the Burkett article, in the wake of Spanish contact. She describes the splendor of the Mexica nobility, contrasted with the way everything now seems to be coming to an end. She invokes the idea of the Lord’s wrath in this apocalyptic world view, implying that He is punishing the Mexica for some offense they have done Him. I think it is interesting that even though it is the Spanish themselves responsible for the destruction, she sees it in terms of their own religious view which she has adopted. She takes the idea of the vengeful God and applies to what she is experiencing in her own life.

Throughout her monologue, one can trace many contradictions that are probably fairly representative of the condition faced by indigenous Mexicans during this time. She refers to the indigenous gods as “demons” and “false,” describing that period as a “time of darkness,” yet her recollection of pre-contact life seems imbued with a sense of order, whereas her life now is overcast by doom. This brings up an important question about the nature of indigenous adoption of the Catholic faith: did people like this old woman truly adapt the Catholic vision to their own lives, or were they merely trying to stay out of trouble with the new order? Did adoption of these new religions allow for the old traditions to be kept alive by merely changing the names of the idols? Or, did the nobles of Tetzcoco who penned this document over-emphasize the Christian influence as their own means of pleasing the new order? These are important things to think about when examining the first-hand documents of the past.

I thought that the episode of This American Life on Testosterone was a very interesting addition to our discussion of gender and sexuality, since it is essentially the hormone responsible for the differences between men and women, both biological and socially constructed. While both men and women produce testosterone, men produce it in much higher quantities, thus contributing to the traits typically seen as masculine, such as aggresiveness and strong desires. One thing I thought was particularly interesting was the account by the man who, due to an undisclosed medical condition, was temporarily without testosterone. He described it as the complete loss of desire, which amounted to a sort of emotional blankness which he described as profoundly satisfying. I liked the way he described it as bringing him closer to God (or god, whichever) because while he was describing his experience I kept thinking about what I, in my limited Western way, know of Buddhism as the attempt to attain spiritual satisfaction by extinguishing desire. I couldn’t help but imagine a view of testosterone as a force that grounds us in earthly pursuits, preventing us from seeing through to some greater spiritual calm, or something. Of course, I don’t think I’d want to follow this train of thought through to its natural conclusion. Also, it seems that this view of testosterone has interesting implications for women as being more spiritually in tune. Anyway, the description of life without this powerful made me think about testosterone in a way I really never would have expected.

Another important point I took away from this episode was the way in which the contest between members of the show’s staff to see who had the highest testosterone-levels between the men and the women, respectively, illuminated the relationship that men and women have to their own gender and identity within that gender. While the men expressly hoped to have the highest levels among their group, which would affirm their masculinity (something I’d be willing to bet every male wants, whether or not they’d be willing to admit it), the women had much more mixed feelings. This illustrated to me the point that, while it is clearly desirable for a man to be more masculine, it is difficult for a woman to determine whether it is better to be more masculine or more feminine. While men can go full-steam-ahead in one gendered direction, women are put into the position of having to synthesize both their masculinity and their femininity in order to excel at the expectations placed on their sex.

I hope this makes sense, because these are difficult concepts to fully articulate. At any rate, I would highly recommend following this link if you have an hour to kill and don’t mind nasally voices.
